An old jeans factory on Railway Parade in Murrumbeena in Melbourne’s south-east has been patched up and given a second chance, reopening as 180-seat cafe Levi
It’s by Harry Butler (who also has Frank’s cafe in Cheltenham), Lucas Sproson (behind Hallelujah Coffee) and Kellie Buntz. The trio have enlisted chef Emma Jeffrey (ex Mammoth, Gilson) to run the kitchen.
Jeffrey’s menu is “cafe staples with a twist”. For breakfast, there are dishes such as Turkish-style poached eggs with hot chilli butter, peri peri, whipped herb yoghurt and sesame seeds; house-made crumpets; avocado on toast with miso pumpkin; or, for something sweet, a breakfast pavlova.
For lunch, smash hits include a hot chicken roll, packed with chips, stuffing and served with a side of gravy, or a club sandwich made with a buttermilk chicken schnitzel, as well as salads.
To drink, as well as Hallelujah coffee and tea, there are milkshakes and thick shakes, kombucha and cold-pressed juices.
Ewert Leaf, the design studio behind Neptune, Hanoi Hannah and Asado, is responsible for the fitout. Behind a bright blue and white facade, the huge, bright space has been made to feel more intimate through dividing glass walls, bar tables and timber banquette seating.
There’s also a kids’ play area, with beanbags, a blackboard and a mini rock-climbing wall.
Levi is open Mon-Sat 7am–4pm, Sun 8am–3pm at 6 Railway Parade, Murrumbeena, levimelbourne.com.au
